You may be asking yourself “how much more can this guy go on about smoking?” Well, at least for another day or so and then I’ll probably be done. Probably
So there’s the whole tactile/primal aspect of it all. But there’s also this huge social component and a weird work-related component to the whole smoking thing.
The social component is obvious. If you have friends or coworkers who smoke they’re going to drag you into their blue haze of idle chit chat. And if you want to quit you’re going to have to convince your friends to quit with you, otherwise they’ll go all mafia on you and will keep pulling you back in.
Then there’s a huge work related fringe benefit for smoking - the unchallenged smoke break. It’s prefectly acceptable (in most work places) to stop every few hours for a 10 or 15 minute break … if you’re taking a smoke break.
I think this is why so many people in the trades smoke. If you’re busy framing a house or pulling wire or jackhammering away you can stop what you’re doing, take out a cig, and stand around for a few minutes. Now if you’re a non-smoker you can’t do that with out seeming like a slacker. Most likely you’re coworkers are goign to be all “Dude, what’re you doing? Get back to framing/pulling/jackhammering!”.
But … I’m going to try doing just that in my new J.O.B. Well, I’m framing it as a productivity booster. There’s this concept of the 48 minute work sprint. And maybe I’ll do something more productive during my 12 minutes than help support Phillip Moris.
